Washington DC ( Little Ethiopia )-Three days after the one month celebration of the Pan-African Victory of Adwa began a wreath in the color of the Ethiopian flag of green, yellow and red was placed in Washington DC ( sister-City of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia ) yesterday by D.C.'s historian, Mr. Chuck Hicks ( Mr. Black History ) who recently received " Community Cornerstone Award " from Councilmember at Large Anita Bonds and Dr. Abebe Haregewoin a descendent of an African general ( Dejazmatch ) Germame Wolde Hawariat and a medical doctor who graduated from Harvard University,
The 12th wreath laying ceremony organized by Little Ethiopia DC was held infront of the African American Civil War with the help of four Aide de Camp from Ethiopia and the United States.There were three United States Colored Troops ( enactors ) at the Commemoration of ADWA and a former member of the elite unit of Emperor Haile Selassie body guard Sergeant Ashenafi. USCT Sergeant Marquett Milton was the lead for the unit.
The Battle of Adwa was fought on 1 March 1896 between the Ethiopian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy near the town of Adwa, Ethiopia where the Italian army was decisively defeated by an iconic emperor Menelik ii asserting the sovereignty of Ethiopia to exist as an independent nation. The emperor's wife empress Taytu Butul entered combat leading her own battalion.
