An Ethiopian Born Professor From Marshall University Dr. Nega Debela Offers Free Interactive Amharic Online Lessons
Huntington, West Virginia ( Little Ethiopia )- This publication introduces an amazing Ethiopian born professor from Marshall University Dr. Nega Worku Debela who offers free interactive Amharic online lessons. Dr. Debela is a faculty member of Marshall University in West Virginia that is named after the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, John Marshall that was founded in 1837.
The professor, in addition to his online lessons, he has established an educational center known as Dr. Nega’s Educational Center. According to documents little Ethiopia received from Dr. Debela, it provides free interactive Amharic online lessons at www.ethioeducation.com
The primary goal of the freely available ethioeducation.com website is to help children of Ethiopian background to fully understand their identity; empower them to feel proud of who they are as individuals and be successful in whatever they do and wherever they live. We believe that one of the ways to understand their identity is by studying Ethiopian languages (Amharic, Afan Oromo etc).
Their center has started teaching Amharic online to children who were born or raised outside Ethiopia to enable them to build cultural and linguistic ties with their roots, as well as, effectively communicate with their own parents and grand parents. Such cultural connections empower the children and develop them to become successful bilinguals and bicultural. Strong cultural and linguistic competencies will further positively impact the children’s confidence and success in life.
This website is created by Dr. Nega’s Educational Center. The Center was established in 2013 in Columbus, Ohio. The Center has provided all educational services to Ethiopian-Americans and other students who live in Columbus area. The services include, but not limited to, tutoring, educational counseling, providing academic scaffolding and mentoring.
He has published two children books (‘Little Brother’ and ‘Amharic for Beginners’). Soon, his memoir “The Illiterates’ Son” will be published. His fourth book, entitled Introduction to Educational Technology is also in the pipeline. This book is geared towards meeting the educational technology needs of Ethiopian educators.
Dr. Nega Worku Debela holds a PhD, in Language Education/Sociology of Education from the University of Adelaide, Australia; M.ED., in Education from Leeds University, United Kingdom; M.Sc. in Information Systems from Marshall University, USA; B.Ed. in Education from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia and a BA in Accounting from Asmara University, Eritrea.
