Ethiopia’s capital to host 7th HortiFlora Expo in March
ADDIS ABABA Ethiopia (Xinhua) -- The 7th edition of HortiFlora Expo will be held from March 14 to 16 in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, attracting producers and input suppliers from home and abroad.
The expo is organized every two year by the Ethiopian Horticulture Producers and Exporters Association (EHPEA) and HPP Exhibitions, with participation of local and international exhibitors and stakeholders.
So far, 120 local and international producers, input suppliers, consultants, buyers and other pertinent stakeholders have registered for the event, according to the organizers.
In a joint press conference later Wednesday, the Executive Director of EHPEA, Tewodros Zewdie, and President of HPP International Group B.V., Dick Van Raamsdonk, said HortiFlora 2018 Expo is an instrument to attract new investors to Ethiopia and promote members’ product to the rest of the world.
Stating that the expo has been growing in the size of the show and the number of participating countries, Raamsdonk said it is now one of the largest events in Africa.
Ethiopia’s horticulture and floriculture industry has developed over the past 15 years towards a full-grown player and put itself on the world map as one of the leading exporters of cut flowers, said the joint press statement.
Ethiopia has competitive and comparative advantage for the production and export of horticulture products due to its suitable agro-ecological zones, proximity to EU, United States, the Middle East and Asia as well as the Ethiopian Airlines expanding its international destinations, reiterated Tewodros.
The Ethio-Djibouti railway project is now a new advantage for the sector’s development.
According to the statement, eyeing the huge potential of the sector, the government of Ethiopia has availed 6,000 hectares of land for horticulture.
