The 122nd. Anniversary of the decisive defeat for the kingdom of Italy that secured the Ethiopian Empire’s sovereignty was fought under the leadership of two iconic monarchs of Ethiopia, Emperor Menelik II and his wife Empress Taytu Butul. The Empress had her own battalion. The futile attempt to colonize Ethiopia by the Italian army was under the command of the Italian governor of Eritrea, General Oreste Baratier. The victory of Adwa on March 1, 1896 ( የዐድዋ ድል በዓል ) will be observed here in Washington DC, the sister city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Battle that stunned the world is celebrated globally including the United States. On Saturday, March 3 , the grandson of Emperor Haile Selassie I, Prince Ermias Sahle Selassie honors former wreath presenter at AACWM , professor Theodore Vestal .
